What’s the difference between THC and CBD?

Cannabis offers comfort to patients who are affected by a vast array of symptoms. Many people are still left wondering what it is exactly in cannabis that alleviates our symptoms, and how it interacts with our bodies.

THC and CBD are two very similar, but also very unique chemicals found in cannabis. These chemicals can be beneficial both when isolated, or in combination, when ingested.

THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive chemical in cannabis. THC from cannabis is very similar to a cannabinoid chemical that occurs naturally in the body, called “anandamide“. Despite the structure of these molecules being quite different, the body is able to recognize the chemical and use it in the brain.

Receptors for cannabinoids are dense in areas of the brain that are also associated with memory, thinking, pleasure and coordination, and these functions are affected when THC attaches to cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoid receptors are located within the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which covers the central and peripheral nervous system, and maintains homeostasis in the body. Homeostasis is the self-regulating of the body.

Cannabinoids act as neurotransmitters which means they can basically send messages between nerve cells throughout the body. THC stimulates cells in the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure, emotional responses, and movement. THC’s ability to stimulate dopamine release explains why cannabis can have such incredible effects on patients with Parkinson’s, as deficiency in dopamine can lead to the disease itself. CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. It has been proven effective in treating inflammation (think nature’s version of “Advil”). It also has an antipsychotic and anti-anxiety effect, neuroprotective ability, and suppresses overactive immune responses.

The protective value of CBD is becoming more commonly understood, and the stigma has drastically reduced around medical marijuana use thanks to this!

Because of their ability to help regulate the immune system and ease pain; CBD products like our 20mg CBD capsules by Zen Medical are often loved by those suffering from HIV, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and everyday aches and pains.

Researchers believe that CBD may protect marijuana users from getting too high, by reducing the psychosis-like effects of THC. There are benefits to many chemical components of natural marijuana!
